The beast of SPEICHERSTADT

THE GOLDEN TICKET IS AN INVITATION TO H...?

Cold Hamburg hides secrets in the shadows of the Speicherstadt, where the fog dances over canals of dark water.

After being cast out of his home, model Hans becomes a haunted target in a labyrinth of warehouses. Pursued by the metallic rattle of chains and by visions of a grotesque creature that moves like a broken puppet, Hans discovers his grandmother and her dolls were only the opening act.

A golden invitation to The New Theatre promises salvation, but the smile of the mysterious coachman who delivered it reveals the horrifying truth.

What happens when the ultimate spectacle demands that you become the monster?

"I believe horror captivates not only through atmosphere but also through cultural and local elements.

That is why I chose to summon my deepest childhood fears and adapt them to this new form. The first is the fear of family: when someone from your own family becomes the great monster."

Author’s Note

Inspired by the cities I have wandered through, I present this short horror story.

The decision to write a tale of terror came during nightly walks through Hamburg, among warehouses, bridges, brown rivers, and the calm German stillness that seemed to dominate everything.

I believe horror captivates not only through atmosphere but also through cultural and local elements. That is why I chose to summon my deepest childhood fears and adapt them to this new form.

The first is the fear of family: when someone from your own family becomes the great monster. The second involves puppets—just recall the dark intro of Dango Balango: the mysterious percussion that grew in intensity, the spiky-haired characters with tiny eyes, and the contrast between the irony of a children’s show and a macabre horror.

I plan to write six more stories about the city—horror or not—culminating in a larger narrative that connects them all.

Enjoy the read!
